Crannk Reviews Grindhouse – Live At Goatsound

18th May 2019 0 By Mike Wilson

Grindhouse are a 4 piece band from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia who play desperate garage punk rock (according to their band bio on facebook) with a dash of comedy.
The bands latest release is an 8 track live recording called “Live At Goatsound” which was recorded by Jason ‘Mr. Smiley’ Luller live at Goatsound Studios, Reservoir Heights in March 2019. The only new noise on this release is the stage banter but if you’ve never heard them its probably a great starting point as it contains songs from the 3 albums they released over the last 5 years.
The first 2 tracks are from the 2014 release “Sleeping At The Peeps” they are “If You Say So” and “Wild Sex & Machine Guns“. These might be some of the bands older songs but the bands sound has never changed much so fit well with the more recent songs. Track 5 “Demolition Dirtbag” is also from that album.

Throbbing Eye“, “It’s In Dad’s Speedo’s” and “SLR 5000” are from the 2016 release  “Crazy Pussy” and you can tell the band had spent some time tweaking their songs but its still the same rock n roll style singing over loud distorted guitars playing punk rock.
To an Australian the song “It’s In Dad’s Speedo’s” will be memorable with its catchy lyrics about the infamous budgie smugglers our dads may have worn to the beach or worse still just around the house in summer. Be prepared for traumatic flashbacks.
This release also has the songs “Shit Cocaine” and “Can I Drive Your Commodore?” from the 2018 release “Can I Drive Your Commodore
These choices match well with the other songs about cars, drugs and sexy things but I can’t help feel a little disappointed that I didn’t  hear “righto dickheads start your engines” in a cool speedway echo voice at the start of “Can I Drive Your Commodore?” like in the original. The only other complaint from me is that they didn’t include the song “Where’s The Fucking Cheese?” because its my favourite song of theirs.

Overall this is a good sounding live release showcasing a well thought out cross section of songs from the bands discography to date. It has some iconic Aussie themes mixed with car enthusiasm and sexy stuff from a band that puts the rock in punk rock.
The next Grindhouse show is on the 15th of June 2019 at The Tote in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia. Event Link Here
